TRAVIS STRIKES AGAIN: NO MORE HEROES was previewed at six gaming conventions in 2018. These were GDC from March 19–23, PAX East from April 5–8, Hinode Power Japan from April 28–29, Japan Expo from July 5–8, Gamescom from August 21–25, PAX West from August 31–September 3 and BitSummit Roadshow Tokyo on September 19.
These previews had dialogue unique to each convention, with some even referencing past conventions. Some of the scripts from these specialized previews were better documented than others. The following script is for the preview of the game at PAX East 2018.
Script
- Welcome to the world of video games
- Travis Touchdown
- How do you know my name?
- You’re a living legend
- A “legend” means someone whose time has passed
- This is bullshit
- I mean, why is a bug even talking?
- This whole place is bugging out
- That’s why you’re here
- Isn’t it?
- I mean, I’ve heard of “entering the game world” and “fighting bugs” and stuff, but⋯
- There’s no yellow monster chomping around in here
- And no brothers with funky hats
- Dr. Juvenile created this world full of imagination and games
- Whatever
- So anyway, I’m assuming the last boss is gonna be Dr. Juvenile
- You really beat around the bush
- This is PAX East
- We’re supposed to clean our shit up and go party
- Everyone knows that
- LET’S
- PARTY TONIGHT!
Travis proceeds through the level, encountering friendly Bugs along the way.
- My grandfather’s last words
- Do whatever you’ve left today tomorrow
- Do whatever you leave tomorrow the day after tomorrow
- But the day after tomorrow, stay up all night
Travis listens to another tip in the same area.
- My grandfather’s last words
- People’s success stories aren’t worth shit
- People’s stories of failure are worth more than gold
Travis notices a ramen shop.
- Oh, a customer ! Welcome, welcome !
- Give me your best ramen
- Sure thin’
- · · ·
- And there you go !
Travis continues through the level, listening to several different tips along the way.
- My grandfather’s last words
- If a man’s gonna cry, he should cry in his dreams
- If he still wants to cry, he should dry his tears
- My grandfather’s last words
- Don’t eat at restaurant chains
- Picture what the ingredients the head office buys
- Picture what countries they come from
- And how they’re handled and managed
- You can’t, can you?
- Be suspicious of ingredients you can’t picture
- My grandfather’s last words
- Are you brave enough to eat poison?
- I’m not
- Because I want to keep living
- I want to burn the image of my family’s faces
- Into my retinas till the moment I die
- Don’t forget: most restaurant chains are poison
- My grandfather’s last words
- Did you know?
- Japanese people eat cake on Christmas
- It’s a weird, mysterious tradition
- Why don’t Japanese people eat Japanese sweets?
- Christmas should be celebrated with wonderful Japanese sweets
- I recommend mitarashi dango
Travis proceeds to the boss encounter with Electro Triple Star.
- Visitor…
- I’ve been waiting
- My name is Electro Triple Star
- The main character of the amazing hit game Electric Thunder Tiger
- Triple Star! I know you!
- I played that for days at the arcade
- The industrial monster designs were badass
- And your Big Cannon was even more awesome!
- I see⋯
- Awesome, was it?
- You mean this?
Electro Triple Star launches his Big Cannon at Travis.
- Dick move, man
- This is PAX East
- Do you know how many video games are on display here?
- The Nintendo staff are all busy
- And these gamers want to play as many games as possible
- You have to consider the turnover rate
- That’s why I cut your power down
- Well then you lose some, too
- If we’re fighting man-to-man
- We should do it fairly
- OK, I’ll give you that
- Let’s have a clean fight
- I’ll give you five seconds
- Actually, I’ll give you the Boston special – 10 seconds
- Come at me as you like
- Haven’t done a boss fight in awhile
- This is gonna feel good!
- Oh you’ll feel something
The fight begins, during which Electro Triple Star takes some damage.
- Visitor…
- You’re good
- You’re wasting your life as an assassin
- Live in the world of video games
- Games are supposed to be played
- Not lived
- Contact me anytime if you like
- I’d like you to be in my next game
- I’ll text you later
- I’d consider a main character role
- Having two leads is risky
- Those games usually suck
- Whatever – anyway, hurry up and change phase
- You’re not telling me this is the end, right?
- The GDC version ended here
- But this is PAX East
- You can hear the gamers scream
- We want more!
- We NEED more boss fights!
- Alright then, gamers!
- Just for you, here’s phase #2!
- Seriously…?
- This dude is batshit crazy
- I like it Triple Star!
The fight continues. Electro Triple Star takes heavy damage.
- Oh yeah, that’s the stuff
- This isn’t over yet
- Travis!
- No way…
- Phase #3…?
- Not just yet
- I’m that for a game show in Europe
- You can see it then
- Europe, huh…
- I’d say Barcelona would be awesome
- I was thinking Paris
- Paris? Not bad
- But Barcelona is where it’s at
- Visitor…
- We’ll meet again
- PAX East is hot
- It will always be hot
- Now, and forever
- I’ll come back to Boston again
- Next time I’ll wear some red socks
- Fenway Park is the world’s greatest ballpark
- Just don’t get too shitfaced tonight
A final screen appears
- THANK YOU FOR PLAYING
Notes
- Death and Drive described Pac-Man and Mario without using any names.
- Several characters discussed PAX East, GDC, and Paris Expo.
- Electro Triple Star attacked Travis Touchdown before their battle began. This did not occur in the published game but it did take place in every other preview.
- Electro Triple Star‘s Big Cannon was called the Hover Boost at this stage of development.
- This was the first preview in which Electro Triple Star had a second battle phase, as he was defeated after just one health bar in the GDC preview, allowing more room for conversation.
- Touchdown was insistent that the next preview of that game should have been in Barcelona. This may have been referencing a collaboration between SUDA51 and Swery65, HOTEL BARCELONA, which they first brainstormed in 2018, the year TRAVIS STRIKES AGAIN: NO MORE HEROES was shown at conventions.
- Touchdown referenced Boston’s Fenway Park and its home team, the Boston Red Sox.
- Some spelling problems in the GDC preview were corrected here, although Bugxtra was still called BugStra in speech bubbles.
